William Hume-Rothery Award (TMS, USA)
Professor Rainer Schmid-Fetzer was distinguished with the William Hume-Rothery Award by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) on February 18, 2014, in San Diego, CA. This is the highest recognition in the field of science of alloys, given by TMS since 1974. A scientific honoring symposium was held through three days with over 40 presentations in five different subject areas related to the work of Rainer Schmid-Fetzer. His opening lecture was entitled "Phase Diagrams - the Beginning of Wisdom". Award ceremony and symposium were held as part of the 2014 TMS Annual Meeting that attracted over 4000 participants. Professor Schmid-Fetzer says "I feel deeply honored to join the ranks of the very few scientists receiving both the William Hume-Rothery Award (TMS, USA) and the Hume-Rothery Prize (IoM3, England). I am grateful to the many colleagues and friends who joined me for my honoring symposium. And the live music by Scottish fiddle legend Alasdair Fraser and cello ace Natalie Haas after the award ceremony was just the cherry on the cake".

The newly enhanced PANDAT, integrating PanEngine, PanOptimizer and PanPrecipitation, bridges thermodynamic calculation, property optimization, and kinetic simulation of multi-component systems based on CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) approach. This software package, in combination with thermodynamic/kinetic/thermo-physical databases, provides an integrated workspace for phase diagram calculation and materials property simulation of multi-component systems. The simulation results, which include thermodynamic, kinetic, thermo-physical properties, and microstructure related information, are critically needed in materials design, in the selection of parameters for fabrication steps such as heat treatment, prediction of performance, and failure analysis. In addition to the functionalities provided by PANDAT as a stand-alone program, its calculation/optimization engines (PanEngine, PanOptimizer and PanPrecipitation) are built as shared libraries and enable their integration with broader applications in the field of Materials Science and Engineering.

2010

Hume Rothery Prize
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IoM3), London, awarded the

Hume Rothery Prize

to Professor Rainer Schmid-Fetzer. In recognition of distinguished achievements concerned with phase relationship in metallic materials or non-metallic materials of metallurgical interest, this for prize was given for his international career spanning over three decades. He specialises in phase equilibria by experiment and calculation from thermodynamic data and is interested in industrial applications of research. He has developed computer programs and techniques to calculate phases equilibria and has provided sets of self-consistent parameters for calculation purposes by critically assessing phase diagrams and thermodynamic data.

Lee Hsun Lecture Award
Professor Schmid-Fetzer received the

"Lee Hsun Lecture Award"

in Shenyang, China. This award is given by the world-renowned Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) and its Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL). The award was presented to Prof. Schmid-Fetzer "For his outstanding contribution in materials science and engineering" on May 31, 2010. Following the award ceremony, he delivered his lecture "Computational Thermodynamics: Applications in Magnesium Alloy Technology".

APDIC Best Paper Award 2010
Jointly with two co-authors from his group, Dr. Andreas Janz and Dr. Joachim Gröbner, Prof. Rainer Schmid-Fetzer received the APDIC Best Paper Award 2010 for the best published manuscript on alloy phase diagram data in the year 2009. APDIC, the Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission, coordinates worldwide activities of 17 member organizations involving 20 countries. The award was given for the paper "Thermodynamics and constitution of Mg-Al-Ca-Sr-Mn alloys - Part I and II", published in Journal of Phase Equilibria & Diffusion, vol 30, pp 146-156 and 157-175 (2009). The prime novelty of that work is a procedure to identify key sample compositions in multicomponent alloys, providing the most crucial information with limited experimental effort. Experimental work with Mg-rich alloys demonstrates the viability of that approach and validates the predictions. Andreas Dr. Andreas Janz
